Travel Advisor Success Stories focus on accomplished advisors and how they achieved success. Here’s a look at Cara McBroom, an advisor with Carlisle Travel Management.

How did you get your start as a travel advisor?

I had been considering it for a long time, but in late 2020, it seemed like a great opportunity to move into the travel space. Having been born overseas in Scotland and studied abroad twice, I have extensive experience traveling throughout Europe.

With a background in wine and a strong passion for European gastronomy, curating wine and food-focused travel itineraries seemed like a perfect next move in my career.

How did you build your business over the years?

I have focused on building an informative website to connect with the right clients. With a strong background in hospitality, I know how to anticipate clients’ needs and create a memorable vacation through attention to detail and a high level of customer service.

I strive to help my clients create wonderful memories so that they keep coming back and refer their friends and family. Building a business is all about building strong relationships, both with my clients and colleagues.

What characteristics make you a successful advisor?

I am very organized, truly believe that the experience lies in the details, and aim to sprinkle in some unexpected surprises for my clients on each vacation. I lean heavily on my vendors to provide the best level of service, both during the planning process and while clients are traveling. If a vendor fails to do so, I find better partners, as my clients’ enjoyment and experience are paramount to my success.

What have been your greatest challenges?

The biggest challenges have been when a vendor lets a client down. Issues tend to arise when traveling; it is the nature of the business. Nonetheless, it’s important to work with the finest hotels, guides, and operators who have my client's best interest in mind.

I never want to disappoint a client, but when problems arise and we have to pivot, it’s important we all work hard to find solutions quickly.

What are your greatest accomplishments?

I believe my greatest accomplishment is the volume of repeat and referral business I maintain. I would say most of my clients fall into this category, which makes me proud, yet that also comes with a certain level of responsibility to consistently meet high expectations.

What tips can you provide to advisors new to the industry?

Remember, your time and expertise are valuable. Make sure to charge for the time invested during the proposal process. If a client does not want to pay, they might not be serious or might just be using you as a price check. We provide a service that requires only a marginal investment from the client. Lastly, ask for the sale.
