Alaska Airlines Asks Judge to Dismiss Lawsuit

Alaska Airlines is apparently trying to shore up any loose ends prior to the decision by the Department of Justice regarding its potential merger with Hawaiian Airlines.

That includes asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit from eight passengers trying to block the merger. The Justice Department said it would rule on the nearly $2 billion merger by August.

The group of passengers say that any merger would diminish the standing and power of Hawaiian Airlines within the aviation industry, saying “the current trend toward concentration, the lessening of competition and the tendency to create a monopoly in the airlines industry is unmatched, unparalleled, and dangerous.”

Alaska disagrees and argued that passengers would not be impacted by a merger and said in the lawsuit that “the merger will vastly expand their customers’ access to the rest of the world.”

Alaska, Hawaiian, and the Justice Department have not publicly commented. Hawaiian is not actually part of the lawsuit filed by the assessors although it obviously has a vested interest.
