Two of the largest airlines in the United States have announced a new partnership.
American Airlines and Alaska Airlines have announced an intent for Alaska to join American’s Atlantic and Pacific joint businesses.
The two carriers are already partners through the Oneworld alliance, but this new agreement furthers their collaboration.
American’s Atlantic joint business includes partnerships with British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus, and LEVEL. Through its Pacific joint business, American partners with Japan Airlines.
Now Alaska will be able to collaborate with those carriers, too, pending government approval. That means Alaska will deepen its international network and offer enhanced connections on the West Coast.
“Joining these joint businesses would put Alaska on equal footing with its competitors by giving our guests more seamless access to international destinations while preserving the care, loyalty benefits and premium experience they expect from Alaska,” Alaska’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Harrison.
Over the past couple years, Alaska has been focused on developing its long-haul international route network, with new flights from Seattle to Tokyo, Seoul, Rome, Reykjavik, and more.
American and Alaska plan to file for approval of the expanded joint business, as well as antitrust immunity, with the Department of Transportation and other relevant authorities.
