American Airlines announced plans to give AAdvantage members
more flexibility when booking flights, allowing eligible travelers to combine
cash and miles toward the cost of an upcoming trip.
American revealed that the new payment option would roll out
over the coming weeks on the airline’s website and mobile app. Once logged into
their AAdvantage accounts, travelers can choose how much of their fare to cover
with miles and how much to pay in cash.
After selecting a flight and proceeding through the booking
process, travelers will see available cash-and-miles combinations during
checkout. A slider allows customers to adjust the mix of cash and miles based
on their preferences.
The carrier said the total trip cost will automatically
update as customers change the combination, and they can enter their payment
information and complete the booking without purchasing the entire fare with
either cash or miles.
The launch is part of a series of recent changes to the
AAdvantage program, which already includes adding new Loyalty Point Reward
options, such as in-flight food and beverage coupons and New York Times
subscriptions at select Loyalty Point levels.
In addition, American revealed plans to offer new benefits
for Million Miler members, designed to give AAdvantage members more ways to use
their rewards while offering greater flexibility when planning and paying for
travel.
