Starting Thursday, travelers flying with American Airlines out of Miami International Airport will no longer be able to use cash.
According to the Miami Herald, American officials announced passengers will have to use credit or debit cards for desk transactions such as checked bags or overweight bag fees. The new cashless system was implemented to speed up the check-in process.
For the travelers who only have cash, American said it will be working with a company that converts cash into debit cards. Ready Credit, will install kiosks near the carrier's check-in area that will allow customers to purchase prepaid Visa debit cards, worth up to $1,000.
"Moving away from cash allows American to assist customers more efficiently," American Airlines spokeswoman Alexis Aran Coello told the Miami Herald. "It also reduces the complexity of work for our agents who will no longer have to worry about handling cash, find exact change or close out a cash drawer at the end of the day. In general, our ticket counter agents support the transition to a cashless environment."
Miami's airport is the latest destination where American has implemented the cashless system. The list already includes other locations such as New York City's John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia, Los Angeles International and Dallas/Fort Worth International.
Other airlines like United, JetBlue and Spirit have also already introduced Ready Stations as part of their cashless transition.
