A section of one of America’s busiest airports is about to get a major upgrade, according to new construction plans from American Airlines.
The Dallas-based carrier has just released renderings that detail a sweeping expansion of Concourse D at Miami International Airport (MIA), where it operates most of its network to Latin America and the Caribbean.
The expansion, dubbed the D60 project, will add significantly more space for travelers and create 17 new gates that are bigger than the current berths, which for now can only accommodate narrower regional jets. The three-story new building will be able to serve larger aircraft that operate international routes and connect fliers directly to the airport’s customs hall.
Travelers will hopefully feel less crowded, especially during boarding, as the project will transform a single, shared boarding area to a layout where every gate has its own boarding space.
The concourse construction project is part of a larger initiative at American to expand its presence in Miami. Last summer, the carrier announced plans to build a new Flagship Lounge in Miami and convert its existing Flagship outpost at MIA into an expanded Admirals Club. Both new spaces will also be located in Concourse D.
“Miami is an essential hub and international gateway for American, and it’s a key part of our history and our future,” said American’s CEO Robert Isom. “This investment — alongside new premium lounges and new routes — reflects our shared commitment with Miami-Dade County and the airport to ensure Miami remains the preeminent U.S. gateway to Latin America.”
American flights comprise 60% of Miami’s overall traffic, the airline said. This summer, it plans to operate more than 380 peak daily flights from the South Florida hub. New route launches from MIA this year include nonstops to Milan and Bimini in the Bahamas.
Construction on the Concourse D expansion project is set to break ground in 2027.
