One of the fastest growing airports in the United States is about to get a major overhaul.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is set to undergo its largest-ever expansion project after construction plans recently got the green light from local officials. The project is expected to be completed by the early 2030s and will see the facility’s capacity double from 15 million passengers per year to 30 million annual travelers. AUS is already handling 20 million fliers per year, so is in dire need of expansion.

The sweeping project includes plans to build a brand new concourse with 20 to 30 gates, which will be connected to the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal by an underground tunnel. The other major new construction will be a massive arrivals and departures hall.

The Austin City Council officially approved the plan on August 28, allowing airport staff to authorize agreements with seven airlines to occupy the new terminal, including Southwest, Delta, United, JetBlue, Spirit, American, and Alaska. Under the agreements, the airlines will fund the airport’s terminal expansion.

"This is a pivotal milestone for Central Texas,” said Austin Airport CEO Ghizlane Badawi. “We are thankful for our airlines’ shared commitment to deliver safe, modern, and efficient airport facilities that meet the needs of travelers and the region for years to come and we are grateful to the Austin City Council, City of Austin leadership and our business and community partners who have supported this transformational work, none of which would be possible without the tens of millions of people who pass through our terminal each year. We can’t wait to deliver a bigger, better AUS for our community."

Airport staff said that they expect to know the total number of new gates being constructed, as well as how many gates each airline will be allotted and the total cost of the project, by early 2026.
