This is how low-budget carrier Avelo Airlines stays ahead of
the pilot shortage. It pays them.
For the fifth time since the carrier’s inception in 2021, it
has raised the compensation level for its pilots. First-year captains will
start at $240 an hour, and that will go up to $298 per hour by the 12th year.
During the same time frame, first officers will go from $131
per hour to $201.
The company said it is on par with or exceeds other regional
carriers or low-budget airlines.
Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said in a
statement, “The salary boost we are unveiling today, coupled with the
exceptional benefits and quality of life that Avelo offers, will further establish
Avelo as an immensely appealing choice for pilots. Our pilots play a pivotal
role in Avelo’s future, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming many more of these
exceptional aviation professionals to our airline in the coming months and
years.”
In addition to adding at least five more planes to its
existing fleet of 16 by next year, the airline plans to open its own flight
training academy in Orlando.
Comparatively speaking, the pay raises are among the most
aggressive in the industry.
Last month, United Airlines’ pilots ratified a new four-year
contract that includes a significant pay increase as well as other
benefits, the union representing the pilots said.
