A Turkish Airlines flight to New York were forced to make an emergency landing on Thursday at Copenhagen Airport in Denmark after an old camera bag was discovered onboard that caused a bomb scare.
According to The Associated Press, the Boeing 777 plane and the 292 passengers were en route from Istanbul, Turkey, to New York City when the bag was discovered. The flight crew made the decision to conduct an emergency landing in Copenhagen.
After the plane landed in Denmark, it was towed to a remote corner of the airport where it could be properly investigated. Once the passengers and crew were safely removed from the aircraft, the local police thoroughly combed through the aircraft looking for explosive devices.
Using bomb-sniffing dogs and army bomb experts, local police spokesperson Christian Olsgaard reports that authorities searched the plane and identified the bag. Inside the carry-on luggage, experts discovered an old camera, likely left on the plane by a previous passenger and not found by cleaning crews in Istanbul.
Turkish Airlines spokesperson Dr. Ali Genc told the AP that the plane was diverted as a precautionary measure after the suspicious bag was discovered. The airline reported that all passengers and cabin crew were safely evacuated from the aircraft, and the plane was expected to resume its flight once after the bomb squads completed its investigation.
The incident wasn't the only case of a plane dealing with a bomb scare on Thursday. According to Travel Pulse's Rich Thomaselli, a Ryanair flight was on the tarmac preparing for takeoff when a bomb threat was called into the Warsaw's Modlin Airport. The investigation revealed it was a hoax and the alleged perpetrator was arrested.
