The U.S. Transportation Department (DOT) has awarded slots tentatively to Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines, according to Aviation Week.

The slots were granted as part of the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act. With the awards, the carriers will be able to launch new daily round-trip service to destinations beyond the 1,250-mile. flight restriction that flights origination from the airport must adhere to.

As part of this development, Alaska will begin serving San Diego from the airport, according to Aviation Week.

American will use the new slot to service San Antonio, Texas. Southwest, meanwhile, will introduce a route from the nation’s capital to Las Vegas, Nevada. United will begin offering service between Washington D.C. and San Francisco, California. Delta Air Lines will fly to Seattle.

The FAA Reauthorization Act was signed in May by President Joe Biden. The measure provided for additional slots at DCA.

The slots are meant to improve nonstop travel options to locations that are considered underserved, while also notching up competition in those same markets.

Airlines that received the awards were required to undergo a competitive application process. In total, eight airlines were seeking new slots with the flying exemptions.

The additional airlines that submitted applications included Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines, Aviation Week reported.

The awards process was not without its share of controversy.

Breeze Airways, an airline that was not eligible to seek one of the slots, expressed criticism of the fact that new entrant airlines were not able to apply. The low-cost carrier also argued that the government agency missed an opportunity offer even more competition in the market.

As it stands now, seven airlines are operating 20 daily round trip flights from the airport to 10 ‘beyond-perimeter’ cities. Those locations include Los Angeles, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle.

With the newly awarded routes, the total beyond-perimeter destinations available from DCA increases to 12.
