The
Dubai International Airport, known as DXB, has surged in a post-pandemic world.
Last
year, almost 87 million
people passed through
Dubai International Airport,
solidifying its status as one of the world's busiest international travel hubs.
It’s not an all-time record for the airport, but it lends credence
to international flying being back in a post-pandemic setting. A little more
than 89 million people passed through Dubai International Airport in 2018.
About 66 million passengers were counted in 2022, making 2023 a
significant increase.
“I think our performance post-pandemic has been quite
exceptional and a tribute to the investment we’ve made in the technology to
smooth things along and also, in our people who’ve performed absolutely
magnificently," Paul Griffiths, the CEO of Dubai Airports, told The
Associated Press.
India, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Pakistan are
the biggest markets for the airport.
Despite that country's ongoing war with Ukraine, Dubai
International Airport also services airlines based in Russia.
Dubai was also one of the first major world cities to
reopen after the pandemic.
“The economic contribution to the city of having more and
more visitors, it’s obvious for everyone to see," Griffiths said. "We
can see it on the roads, we can see in hotel occupancy, and we see it in the
general economy here.”
DXB has plans to remodel for future growth.
“Ultimately, there will come a time when a new airport will
be required to continue to fund the expansion of the aviation sector,"
Griffiths said. "But plans for that are very much under discussion.”
Currently, Dubai International Airport connects to 262
destinations in 104 countries.
