One of the most important factors in new airport construction: Flexibility. With security demands on airports constantly in flux, Reuters.com pinpoints one of the most important concerns among designers, discussing how they meet the changing needs of travelers and how they plan to keep them safe.
"We don't know what's coming next so we design for that," said Wilson Rayfield, executive vice president in charge of aviation at the architecture, design and consulting firm.
Designers are constantly being challenged to meet the needs of travelers - keeping them safe but not slowing them down at the airport. And when events such as the most recent bombing in the Istanbul airport take place, designers are asked to come to the "frontline of the security challenge."
According to Reuters, a terminal renovation soon to begin at Denver International Airport will incorporate the latest innovations, such as creating more security checkpoints dispersed throughout the airport in order to reduce crowds.
More innovations are sure to be on their way. In May, the Transportation Security Administration put out a call for new ways to address threats.
