JetBlue Airways has issued an apology, a credit and a $5,000 charitable donation to a Massachusetts mother whose three-year old daughter urinated in her seat last week after being told they could not use the bathroom during a ground delay.
The incident happened last Monday when a JetBlue plane pulled away from the gate at John F. Kennedy International in New York, headed for Logan Airport in Boston. But the flight was almost immediately held in an active taxiway area at JFK due to traffic, and Federal Aviation Administration rules prohibit passengers from leaving their seats while the plane is still on the tarmac.
The flight attendants followed the rules, but after about 30 minutes the young girl could no longer hold it and urinated in her seat.
The pilot of the flight then told the entire plane that he was bringing the aircraft back to the gate because of a "non-compliant passenger." Cooler heads prevailed when an off-duty pilot, sitting two rows in front of the mother, Jennifer Devereaux, convinced the pilot and flight attendants to let her and her daughter remain on the flight.
JetBlue issued a personal apology to Devereaux via a phone call, gave her a $50 credit toward her next flight, and offered to make a $5,000 donation to the charity of her choice. The airline also said it was putting the crew through sensitivity training.
