Traveling with checked luggage is once again getting more expensive for many fliers, as JetBlue has raised its baggage fees once again.
Under the carrier’s new fee structure, checked bags will now cost fliers at least $50 for the first bag, an increase from $45 earlier this year.
Passengers who travel during peak times like holidays or those who pay to check a bag within 24 hours of travel can expect to pay even more, up to $70 for the first bag, depending on the time of year they’re flying.
JetBlue said that the higher fees were to help offset the rising price of fuel and operating costs, according to a statement the airline gave to USA Today.
Jet fuel prices have risen significantly this year due to the ongoing war in Iran, increasing airlines’ fuel bills by billions of dollars.
In April, soon after the war first began, U.S. airlines began raising their baggage fees as fuel prices began climbing in an effort to keep airfares low.
However, airfares have still increased at a record rate, jumping nearly 23% year over year in September.
