The Lufthansa Group wants its money back.
Lufthansa sent a bill for approximately $147,191 to six
climate activists who blocked Berlin Airport.
The incident happened in November of 2022 and led to several
flight cancelations. And since Lufthansa had to eat the cost of the canceled
flights, they now want to be reimbursed.
Lufthansa Group budget carrier Eurowings was part of the
affected cancellations.
“Eurowings will claim material damages for the airlines of
the Lufthansa Group that were caused by the actions of activists at the
airports in Berlin, Dusseldorf and Hamburg,” the airline told German newspaper Bild.
“This has already been done for the action in Berlin. We cannot comment on
ongoing proceedings beyond that.”
There have been similar incidents at airports in Dusseldorf
and Hamburg. In one instance, activists glued themselves to the runway.
The activist group is known in Germany as Last Generation.
The Lufthansa Group said it had 10 flights canceled, 21
delays, and one diversion that day in Berlin.
At the time, an activist spokesperson said: “In the end, we
will all suffer from the climate catastrophe. However, especially those who are
least responsible for them are hit first and hardest. A society cannot afford
this ruthlessness.”
