Due to increased travel demands both to and from the city of
Omaha,
the Omaha Airport Authority has announced a $950 million terminal expansion
project that will almost double the size of the city’s airport (OMA) and add
two international gates and significant traveler amenities.
In a statement, Omaha executive director Deborah Ward said, “Airline
passenger demand
continues to grow in Omaha, with several months last year seeing
record-breaking passenger counts. This expansion project further demonstrates
the increasing popularity of Omaha.”
The Omaha Airport Authority says that in 2023, OMA recorded
its second busiest year in history with more than five million passengers
traveling through the airport and surpassing 2019 pre-pandemic levels.
The almost billion-dollar expansion project will include
larger gate boarding areas, expanded baggage claim, more restaurant and retail
shops beyond the security checkpoint, and a new automated inline baggage
handling system which will make security screenings safer, faster and more
convenient.
Initial phase of the Build OMA construction project is
already underway, with work expected to be completed in 2028.
“OMA currently offers non-stop flights to 31 of the busiest
airports in the country. Convention and event planners have long praised the
city’s central location and ease of Omaha’s airport,” added Ward. “Our airport
is just four miles from the downtown convention and event district, and this
new expansion and modernization plan will only enhance the airport’s
convenience.”
