Cool Places to Escape the Dog Days of Summer

Summer 2026 has been warmer than average across much of the U.S. with temperatures frequently running 10–15°F above normal and numerous daily records being challenged or broken in many regions.

The dog days of summer are the perfect excuse to trade relentless heat for cooler adventures. Across the U.S., travelers can head to mountain towns, breezy coastal escapes, or lakeside retreats where crisp mornings and refreshing temperatures offer a welcome break. Whether it's hiking through alpine forests, relaxing by the ocean, or exploring charming small towns, escaping the summer heat can make the season feel like an entirely new experience.

These are some of those places that offer respite from the heat along with picturesque views and fun activities to fuel the adventurous spirit.

Bend, Oregon

Situated along the sunny, dry side of Oregon along the eastern slope of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest, Bend offers a dozen or more alpine lakes to explore. Picture piebald volcanoes dappled with snow up high as you paddle, swim or otherwise gambol about in pristine mountain air or lounge on a beach and picnic under the firs. Visitors enjoy rent a pontoon boat for tooling around the lakes or fishing for trout.

One unique feature of the town is the Deschutes River that actually flows through downtown, a centerpiece of summer life where floating, kayaking, paddleboarding and just relaxing along the riverfront parks are all part of the experience.

Bodega Bay, California

Set along the stunning Sonoma Coast, Bodega Bay offers a true California ‘coolcation’ with Pacific breezes, a morning marine layer, wide-open beaches, coastal trails, fresh seafood and a slower summer rhythm. While inland California heats up, Bodega Bay remains refreshingly cool.

Doran Beach one of the best entry points. Its two-mile stretch of sand sits inside Doran Regional Park and offers gentle shoreline walks, kite flying, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, birding, picnicking, and easy access to the harbor. Nearby, travelers find Bodega Head for dramatic coastal views, whale watching during migration seasons, and hiking trails overlooking the Pacific.

Whidbey Island, Washington

When temperatures climb across most of the country, Whidbey Island, Washington offers a refreshing summer escape thanks to its mild marine climate and cooling breezes coming off the Salish Sea. Located just north of Seattle, the island typically enjoys summer highs in the 70s, often 5–10 degrees cooler than inland destinations during regional heat waves.

Langley, a charming waterfront village perched above Saratoga Passage offers whale watching, kayaking, beachcombing, exploring local galleries and boutiques, or enjoying farm-to-table dining with water views. New in 2026, a passenger ferry connects Everett and Langley, making it easier than ever for travelers to reach the island without a car.

1000 Islands, New York

One of the most scenic regions in New York State, the 1000 Islands (1,864 in total) lies along the St. Lawrence River, where the body of water forms the international border between the U.S. and Canada. Some of the islands are in the U.S. and others located in Ontario, Canada.

The picturesque area features storybook castles, scenic cruises, quaint villages and a myriad of water activities. Whitewater rafting, scuba diving, golf and hiking are popular activities. The region also sports numerous breweries, wineries and distilleries. Average August temperatures range from the comfortable mid-70s to low-to-mid 60s.

Beech Mountain, North Carolina

This charming destination in North Carolina’s high country sits nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains at 5,506 feet elevation, making it the highest incorporated town in the eastern U.S. Temperatures rarely climb above 80°F with low humidity.

The lack of heat lets visitors safely enjoy a wide range of outdoor summer activities. Popular adventures include hiking (with nearly 30 miles of trails), biking, fishing and birding. In late summer, Beech Mountain is host to 'Autumn at Oz' at the historic, unique Land of Oz theme park.

Breckenridge, Colorado

Breckenridge is one of Colorado’s most popular summer mountain destinations. While it's famous for skiing, summer offers warm, comfortable days with temperatures ranging from 65-75°F, wildflowers, hiking, festivals and outdoor recreation at an elevation of about 9,600 feet.

Hundreds of trails offer easy walks to challenging alpine hikes. Other outdoor activities include mountain biking, fishing, whitewater rafting and horseback riding. A trip up to Boreas Pass is well worth the scenic drive and views from the top are spectacular. Hanging around historic Main Street is a delight with its colorful Victorian-era buildings, art galleries, coffee shops, local restaurants and breweries, coffee shops and ice cream and candy stores.

Bar Harbor, Maine

One of New England’s most popular destinations, Bar Harbor is known for its rocky coastline, fresh seafood, and direct access to the stunningly picturesque Acadia National Park. One of the biggest summer draws is Bar Harbor’s comfortable climate. Even August temperatures only range from 72–76°F. Evenings often cool into the 50s°F, so a jacket or sweater is nice to have.

The scenic Park Loop Road around Acadia National Park is a must-do, along with watching a sunrise or sunset from Cadillac Mountain. Outdoor fun includes hiking, biking, whale watching, nature cruises and sunset sailing. Be sure to get your fill of the famous fresh Maine lobster and a slice of Maine’s beloved blueberry pie.

Paws Up Montana

Western-chic Paws Up Montana is a dreamy, two-Michelin key, 37,000-acre ranch in Western Montana. Located alongside the Blackfoot River, the property offers an endless list of activities to let guests’ inner adventure run wild, with more than 100 miles of designated horseback trails, hiking, mountain biking and ATV activity.

Summer temperatures range from 71°F high in June to 82°F in August. Nighttime temps of 38 to 39° allow for cozy nights and early mornings spent under clear Montana skies with a warming campfire.

Jefferson & Berkeley Counties, West Virginia

This is Appalachian River Gorges country, and this region offers a summer respite in just over an hour’s drive from the DC metro area. The higher elevation makes the area several degrees cooler than low-lying regions with lower humidity. Overnight temperatures allow heat to escape, so mornings often start in the 50s or 60s °F.

The real draw to this area however is its premier location where the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers meet, offering whitewater rafting, tubing along shaded river gorges and flatwater kayaking.
