Two male flight attendants were assaulted onboard a US Airways flight before it even left the tarmac at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday night.
According to WCNC.com's Glenn Counts, Flight 2005 had just pushed away from the gate and was headed for Ft. Lauderdale when two flight attendants, ages 58 and 34, were allegedly punched by a suspect who had been yelling and screaming.
As a result of the assault, the 58-year-old flight attendant suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to the hospital on a stretcher.
The suspect surrendered to police after the plane returned to the gate and was taken for a mental health evaluation. He is expected to face assault charges upon his release.
According to WCNC via USA Today's Ben Mutzabaugh, eyewitnesses said the man was screaming about assassins shortly before the confrontation with the flight attendants.
The flight eventually took off following the unexpected delay. Had the plane been in the air when the incident occurred, the FBI would be conducting the investigation instead.
US Airways has been a subsidiary of the American Airlines Group since December 2013 when the two formally merged.
