Was
it a mistake, or was it malicious?
Officials
at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are trying to figure out why the
Internet went out on Saturday and caused numerous delays. One
theory
they floated is that they were the possible victims of a cyberattack.
In
a statement, airport officials said that the outage was the culprit of several
delays and could have emanated from the Port of Seattle. The
incident happened on Saturday.
“Earlier
this morning, the Port of Seattle experienced certain system outages indicating
a possible cyberattack,” authorities said. “The Port isolated critical systems
and is in the process of working to restore full service.”
More
than 250 flights were affected by 5 p.m. PT; 247 were delayed and six
were canceled.
“We
are working closely with appropriate authorities and partners to help travelers
who may be impacted,” the airport said.
Anyone
flying in and out of Seattle-Tacoma is urged to call their airline about
possible changes. The airport is one of the busiest on the West Coast and
caters to domestic and international flights.
It
was just a year ago that two hotels in Las Vegas were compromised in cyberattacks,
and the Federal Aviation Administration announced
earlier this week that it wants to upgrade cybersecurity on airplanes.
