Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has landed in one of Georgia’s most historic and picturesque towns at a tumultuous time.
On August 14, Spirit officially began service on its new route from New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Savannah, Georgia (SAV). The budget airline will now operate daily nonstop service on the route all year round.
"We're always looking for new destinations our Guests will love, and the addition of Savannah to Spirit's network offers a great value for a charming getaway," said Rana Ghosh, Spirit’s senior vice president and chief commercial officer. "Our new service will also provide Savannah travelers with easy access to four cities offering beautiful beaches, vibrant music scenes and big city views."
But it’s not just travelers based in the Northeast who will have affordable access to Savannah with new flights from Spirit. The carrier is also launching new routes to the Georgia town from Florida, Tennessee, and Michigan.
On October 9, Spirit will begin nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale, Florida (FLL), and Nashville (BNA) to SAV. The routes will operate 4x and 3x weekly, respectively. On October 10, the airline will begin new twice-weekly service between SAV and Detroit (DTW).
"Spirit's addition of SAV to its route network is a major win for our region,” said Greg Kelly, executive director of the Savannah Airport Commission. “This new service opens up exciting travel opportunities for visitors heading to Southeast Georgia and the coastal areas of Southeast South Carolina. For our local community, it means convenient access to four of Spirit's most popular destinations — bringing more choice, value, and connectivity.”
By the end of 2025, the airline will serve three destinations in Georgia. In addition to Savannah, the airline has announced a new route between Fort Lauderdale and Macon, Georgia, which will launch on October 16. Spirit has had Atlanta on its route map for nearly two decades.
The new route launch is a spot of good news for Spirit, which has been facing dire straits lately. The carrier recently said in a financial filing that it could be on the verge of going out of business if it doesn’t raise more cash quickly.
