St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport has always been a viable alternative to the much larger Tampa International in Florida.
Now it will be even more of a rival.
St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport will undergo an expansion that is estimated to cost about $110 million. The hope is that the expansion of the existing terminal will bring more airlines and more flights to the airport.
It handled more than 2.5 million passengers last year. The primary tenant at St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport is Allegiant Airlines.
An expanded facility would also create consolidated security checkpoints for the Transportation Security Administration as well as add more dining options, among other things.
Requests for proposals have already been issued.
Pinellas County commissioners also requested a 2024 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration. If everything goes right, construction is expected to begin in 2026.
The St. Petersburg-Clearwater area is home to Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays and the spring training site of the Philadelphia Phillies but is generally acknowledged as a spring break destination.
