Love him or hate him, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump may have done travelers a huge service last month when he compared U.S. airports to those of third world countries.
With Trump bringing the U.S.'s outdated airport infrastructure to the forefront, TravelPulse Radio co-hosts Tim Wood and Barry Kaufman brought on travAlliancemedia founder and CEO and frequent flyer Mark Murphy to discuss where America's airports rank among the world's best and what can be done to improve them.
While Murphy doesn't appear to be leaning one way or the other ahead of Election Day, he's in agreement with Trump on at least one issue. "He [Donald Trump] is right about that and I think anybody that does travel would agree with that statement," said Murphy, pointing out that only a few U.S. airports can be found in the top 50 worldwide.
"Basically, travel and tourism, when you look at it as a whole, is the largest employer in the world. There are more people in the travel and tourism area and touch it than any other industry. So yeah, it makes sense to invest in it and take it to the next level," added Murphy.
The solution, he believes, is to free up the private sector.
"Where Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton could do a lot of good is unleashing the private sector. Unleash it and give them incentives to do these things and we're all going to be a lot happier four or eight years from now."
