The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), expecting some 18 million travelers and air crew members to transit through security checkpoints across the nation throughout the Memorial Day Weekend, provided some travel tips for those taking to the skies during the busy travel period.
The TSA reminded travelers to ensure their carry-on bags comply with TSA regulations, which they can find on the website, at @AskTSA or by texting 275-872 (AskTSA). They’re also requesting, due to the large volume of travelers, to plan some extra time to arrive early.
Those who are planning to bring a firearm must declare it through the airline and pack it, unloaded, in their checked luggage inside a hard-shell case. Failure to do so could result in hefty fines, arrest and other penalties.
Starting May 7, fliers over the age of 18 are now required to present their REAL ID at TSA checkpoints. If they don’t have a REAL ID yet, travelers are required to present another acceptable form of government-issued ID, such as a passport. Those who don’t present either may be subject to additional screening.
"TSA is ready for the additional passenger volume, and we look forward to welcoming families traveling during this peak period," said TSA Acting Administrator Ha McNeill. "As a friendly reminder, to ensure a smooth screening experience, bring acceptable forms of ID like your REAL ID."
TSA PreCheck is also a helpful way to speed up the security checkpoint process. Children 17 and under can join an adult with TSA PreCheck when TSA PreCheck is visible on the child’s boarding pass.
AAA expects over 45 million travelers to take to the roads and the skies this Memorial Day Weekend, breaking the all-time high set in 2005 when 44 million Americans traveled over the extended weekend.
