JetBlue founder David Neeleman is preparing to launch a new low-cost airline in the U.S., Airline Weekly reported.
The new carrier, Moxy, is eyeing $100 million in startup funding and would operate fuel-efficient Bombardier CS300 aircraft at smaller, lower-cost airports located near major cities, including New York City, Chicago and Baltimore, among other prospective destinations.
Moxy plans to begin service in 2020 and expects all 60 of its CS300 aircraft to be delivered by 2024. Airbus recently acquired a majority stake in Bombardier's C Series Aircraft Limited Partnership, with the deal expected to close next month.
Citing sources familiar with the plans and a presentation, Airline Weekly reported Moxy only plans to sell point-to-point flights to keep costs low. Nonetheless, Moxy is likely to operate more like JetBlue than Spirit Airlines, offering free Wi-Fi and other perks while charging fees for some other services.
Neeleman has helped found multiple airlines over the years, including JetBlue nearly two decades ago and Brazilian airline Azul as recently as 2008. The former is currently in the midst of expanding its footprint on the West Coast and recently launched a redesigned website as part of an ongoing digital transformation.
The 58-year-old Neeleman is also an investor in TAP Air Portugal.
