A simpler process and more flexible earning and redemption options will be hallmarks of Amtrak's completely overhauled Guest Rewards program, set to be implemented January 2016.
Explaining the changes, Matt Hardison, Amtrak executive vice president of marketing and sales said in a statement, "This program takes Amtrak Guest Rewards to the next level with improved earnings potential and expanded, simplified redemptions. We are confident this program combines what passengers want most - the ability to grow points earnings rapidly with the freedom to use those points in the way that best fits their individual travel needs."
These are some blockbuster changes. First and foremost, the reward program will have no more blackout dates or time-of-day travel restrictions, making it exponentially easier to use the reward points.
Amtrak is also offering bonus points for Acela and business class travel, points that never expire with any qualifying account activity within 36 months as well as a new redemption structure for free Amtrak travel based on ticket price instead of zones or routes.
Add in redemption opportunities for multi-ride tickets and monthly passes, the ability for customers to book, modify and cancel reward tickets themselves and a cash-plus-points option, and the restructured rewards program should have Amtrak's frequent riders excited about the new year.
