Ticket sales were briefly suspended for the scenic train in the Riviera Maya but have since been restored and can be purchased under a new government website.

Apparently, there was a mechanical failure.

The trip, which shuttles people throughout ancient Mexican ruins and key tourism destinations, opened in December.

Possibly the most important route of the journey, from Cancun to Tulum, will now open on February 29. This leg of the trip contains what is arguably the most important historical ruins in the country of Mexico.

The general public can purchase tickets online for all available routes, with the government operating the website.

E-ticket purchases were suspended for four days.

According to the government, “Tren Maya informs national and foreign tourists, as well as the local population, that the sale of tickets continues without incident through the page, although the sale through the e-ticket platform was suspended, the Mayan Train continues selling tickets, but now through its own platform.”

Seat and payment selections are available on the new online system, with tickets also available for purchase at station kiosks.

Tickets cost between 2,123 and 3,391 pesos, although there is a discount with local identification.

The train has already proven to be quite popular with tourists and locals alike, even though it still has a couple of sections left to be completed.

That final leg of the journey will include popular sites, such as the ruins of Chichen Itza. The train project alleviates the need to hire a taxi or private transportation to see the ruins, especially for those who are not specifically planning to visit the historical sites as their sole destination but combining it with a beach vacation.

The Maya Train is said to travel at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour. In total, the entire length of the train trip will be about 300 miles.

Three new sections of the trip are currently being completed.
