Disney Cruise Line's Disney Adventure became the largest passenger vessel by capacity and gross tonnage to cross the Panama Canal on Monday. The operation showcased the famous canal’s ability to manage large capacity transits with precision.
Measuring 208,000 gross tons and more than 342 meters in length, the transit required extensive coordination among Panama Canal pilots, tug crews and operations teams.
Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales presented a plaque to the vessel to recognize the inaugural transit. This distinction acknowledged the importance of this milestone for both the waterway and the cruise industry.
Disney Adventure was the first of five cruise ships making their debut journey through the Panama Canal this year, with AIDAdiva, Brilliant Lady, Celebrity Ascent and Star Seeker set to make their inaugural transit later.
In 2026, more than 40 Neopanamax cruise ship transits are expected to cross the canal.
Norwegian Bliss held the previous record for the largest passenger vessel to transit the canal, with a capacity of 5,000 passengers and 168,000 gross tons.
Added to the Disney Cruise Line fleet in 2025, the Disney Adventure accommodates around 6,700 passengers, 2,500 crew members and features 2,111 staterooms.
