Authenticity has proved to be a needed check box on so many travelers’ wishlists, especially in the past few years, as stories of mass tourism—and what it can wreck on communities—have made the rounds. But there are still smaller, more unspoiled choices, such as Loreto, a city in Mexico’s Baja California Sur state that embraces being different.
Loreto appeals to many visitors because it has its own sense of place and is not another overdeveloped beach destination. Here, the beauty of its people is matched only by its stunning landscapes and fascinating history. Often called the gem of Baja California Sur, Loreto is a special kind of paradise. Here are some of the things that make this warm weather destination different and beloved.
• The city is one of Mexico’s much lauded “Pueblo Mágicos,” a designation that reaffirms the country’s belief that the town boasts unique natural beauty, meaningful history, or cultural traditions.
• The Museo de las Misiones Jesuitas is a must-visit, where visitors can experience 17th and 18th Century artifacts and learn more about the history and legacy of the mission system, which was so critical to this region.
• Bay of Loreto National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is bursting with marine life, from marine mammals to nearly 900 fish species and 700 plant species. Along with its five islands, this is a spot for biodiversity and unrivaled natural beauty.

• Cuisine is taken seriously here. You’ll find something for everyone, with vacation staples like craft breweries, Italian, bakeries, and steakhouses. But there are plenty of seafood options as well, along with authentic Mexican options and plenty of farm to table restaurants, where you can support local growers.
• There are still plenty of uncrowded beaches here, along with open desert landscapes, peaceful islands, and opportunities to connect on a more individual basis with the people who live and work here.
• Outdoor options are plentiful in and around Loreto. From experiencing ranch life with locals to taking a whale watching tour, surprises are everywhere here. You can kayak, snorkel, go sport fishing, or hike through the magnificent Sierra de la Giganta mountain rage—even on the same day if you’re particularly adventurous.
