With Norwegian always making PortMiami home, the company announced a major expansion to allow an even greater commitment and evolution of the port city.

Calling the development of new ports "key to the cruise industry," Frank Del Rio, President and Chief Executive Officer, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., unveiled plans for a brand new 166,000 sq. ft terminal.

Pending final approval, which the company expects in mid-April 2019, construction will begin immediately for an opening in 2019.

"Make no mistake, Norwegian is Miami," said Rebecca Sosa, Commissioner of Miami-Dade Country, who then pledged to continue working with Norwegian far into the future.

"This is an example of public and private partnerships working the right way," said Del Rio who highlighted the history Norwegian has had in Miami over the years. According to Del Rio, Norwegian's three brands currently bring more than one million guests to PortMiami every year. That number is expected to grow exponentially.

Norwegian says the new terminal will accommodate more than five thousand passengers and feature state of the art enhancements for the embarkment and disembarkment process as well as indoor and outdoor lounges for passenger relaxation. The plans have been made to the highest of LEED standards, according to Del Rio

Designed by Bermello Ajamil & Partners, the concept of the design centers around three shells suspended on a podium and will be a completely open concept focusing people on the "jewel" within.

This statement of growth echoes comments Del Rio made at the Seatrade keynote, where he said he was "bullish" on the company's long-term future. Norwegian recently announced a strong financial performance in 2017 and showcased a strong plan forward into 2018 and beyond.

A new terminal in Norwegian's "home" of PortMiami will become a fixture in those plans.
