Royal Caribbean has entered into a strategic partnership with Maritime Procurement Services (MPS) to develop a brand new, state-of-the-art solid waste management facility in Mahahual in Quintana Roo, Mexico.
The cruise giant, which has plans for a new private island destination—Perfect Day Mexico—in Mahahual, said the new facility will feature "advanced sorting technologies, closed-loop processing systems, high-efficiency material recovery solutions, and best-in-class environmental controls" to improve efficiency and reduce reliance on landfills.
The facility will also support local jobs and support the region's sustainable growth plans.
"Partnering with a trusted, local operator such as MPS ensures that this facility will deliver lasting benefits to the region. Together, we are taking concrete action to protect the ecosystems and communities that make the Mexican Caribbean so special," Ari Adler, president, Royal Caribbean Group Mexico, said in a statement.
"We are proud to be part of this transformational project. At MPS, we have built a strong foundation in circular economy operations across 13 ports in Mexico, and today we take a decisive step forward by integrating cutting-edge technology with a model that transforms waste into value," added Alejandro Trillo Menchelli, CEO of MPS.
"Mahahual will become a benchmark for how sustainability can scale with real impact, aligning industry, community, and the environment," said Menchelli.
