The $600 million Royal Caribbean port redevelopment project in Mahahual, Mexico is earning the support of the local government.

The plan, announced in November 2024 by President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International Michael Bayley and Governor Mara Lezama, will transform Quintana Roo with the plan, which would create Perfect Day Mexico at the Mahahual cruise port.

Perfect Day Mexico will be able to accommodate 21,000 guests each day, welcoming 2.6 million to 5 million visitors a year, creating over 1,000 jobs through 2027 and nearly 1,000 more direct jobs once it’s operational. The Maya Tren will also connect to the destination.

The cruise line has already begun managing the Costa Maya Cruise Port in Mahahual, which began in July.

According to Riviera Maya News, the Chetumal National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) has announced their support for the new development project this week, largely due to the job creation potential.

“Royal Caribbean’s investment will be essential in the reactivation of the local and regional economy, strengthening the supply chain in various business areas that will meet both the demands of the staff who will be working there and the requirements for building the infrastructure, ” said Canaco’s President, Amir Efrén Padilla Espadas.

“It [the project] will be based on environmental protection criteria, one of the fundamental commitments negotiated by the governor to attract this multi-million-dollar project. In fact, we know that Royal Caribbean considers respect for the environment and community social inclusion.”

Additional developers are now eyeing the destination: in June, one submitted environmental impact statements for two developments, Lotes Norte Costa Maya and Lotes Sur Costa Maya, which would create 24 new boutique hotels just outside of Mahahual.

Perfect Day Mexico will feature conservation land, as well as four berths for cruise ships, a waterpark, the longest lazy river in the world, a premium beach club area, adults-only spaces and more.
