Silversea Cruises' original ship, the Silver Cloud, dates back to 1994, but it's about to take on a new life.
The Silver Cloud will soon transfer over to the Silversea Expeditions brand for polar itineraries. Besides converting it into an ice-class expedition ship, it will also be updated throughout with refreshed decor.
The work to remodel the luxurious Cloud for expedition cruising will take place between this August and October. Among the previewed upgraded venues onboard will be La Terrazza, The Restaurant, Observation Lounge, Panorama Lounge and Venetian Lounge.
La Terrazza will feature new teak flooring, upholstery and lighting, while The Restaurant will sport new carpet and upholstery. An observation lounge will be created onboard as well as a new gym complete with Technogym equipment.
The multi-million dollar refurbishment largely entails ice-strengthening the ship for polar regions. In so doing, expedition guests will discover adventures off-board in addition to Silversea's signature onboard luxuries.
260 passengers were accommodated outside the poles, but only 200 will be carried to polar territories. Fewer guests means more dedicated attentive service and ease of disembarking for exploration.
"As the first ship in our fleet, Silver Cloud has a special place in Silversea's history, and we're delighted to reveal further details of her refurbishment. We look forward to welcoming guests aboard to experience Silver Cloud's luxurious interiors as well as her incredible itineraries later this year," said Barbara Muckermann, Chief Marketing Officer at Silversea Cruises, in a press release.

Back in 1994, Silver Cloud was launched by Antonio Lefebvre. Today, his son, Manfredi Lefebvre, has been chairman of Silversea since 2001. He has seen the company grow from four to eight ships, (and nine once the Silver Muse sets sail this year).
When the Silver Cloud relaunches, joining the Silver Explorer, Silver Discoverer and Silver Galapagos in the expedition fleet, it will include up to 19 onboard experts to guide guests in their journeys. The ship's theater will host daily presentations and lectures, all of which will be simulcast into every private suite.
