Viking has announced a new river cruisetour itinerary that will include The Passion Play in Oberammergau. Produced every ten years, the play depicts the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ. Local citizens have performed the play every decade since 1634.
The new cruisetour, Oberammergau, The Passion Play, is scheduled from May through October 2020. It's a ten-day journey from Munich to Budapest focusing on the play, plus destinations on the Danube River in Germany, Austria, and Hungary.
"We are committed to providing our guests with opportunities that bring local culture and history to life both onboard our ships and onshore," said Richard Marnell, senior vice president of marketing. "To help our guests learn about a destination through 'Working World,' 'Local Life,' or 'Privileged Access' experiences, such as this historic performance, is what we call 'The Viking Way' of exploration."
In addition to The Passion Play performance, itinerary highlights include a tour and organ concert in Passau at the 17th-century St. Stephen's Cathedral. Guests will also attend a Mozart & Strauss Concert in Vienna. And, in Nuremberg, they'll tour important sites connected to the city's World War II history. Among them: Zeppelin Field and the Palace of Justice, where the Nazi war trials took place.
In Budapest, guests will experience the city's famous thermal baths, first discovered during the Roman era.
Viking is offering special fares plus savings on international air through June 30, 2018.
The Viking fleet currently consists of 65 ocean and river cruise vessels. By 2027 the line will operate 16 930-guest ocean cruise ships.
