Another Caribbean destination is reporting strong visitor arrivals early 2019, as Anguilla Tourist Board officials say the southern Caribbean nation is in the midst of its best winter season in 27 years.
Anguilla's first-quarter tourist arrivals totaled 30,135 travelers, the highest figure recorded since ATB began tracking arrivals. The island recorded 11,940 overnight, land-based tourist arrivals in March, Anguilla's highest-ever total for the month and the highest one-month total in the history of Anguilla's tourism industry, officials said.
The March visitor total also represents a 29.2 percent year-over-year increase over 2017, and a 22.6 percent increase over March 2016, the month that previously held the record for the most tourist arrivals.
During the first four months of 2019, just short of 40,000 travelers spent one or more nights on Anguilla, officials said. The island has attracted almost 50 percent of the total tourist arrivals it recorded in 2016 to date, Anguilla's best-ever year for tourist arrivals.
The island's tourism hot streak continued in April, as Anguilla hosted 9,790 arrivals, the largest number of visitors for April since 1993. "There is still much work to be done; our goal remains a 20% increase in tourist arrivals over 2016," said Donna Banks, ATB's chairperson.
She added, "We appreciate and value the continued support and cooperation of all our stakeholders, and the people of Anguilla, in helping us to achieve these significant milestones for our industry."
