Cancun has been a beloved spot for many travelers over the years, and in 2018, the destination worked to expand their airline routes making it easier for people from different parts of the world to visit this sunny destination.
In fact, in 2018 alone, 30 new routes were added to Cancun International Airport, with the majority coming from the U.S., Germany, Russia, Canada, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Belgium.
According to data, most U.S. citizens travel to Cancun from Austin, Chicago, Columbus, Indianapolis, Lansing, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Francisco, and Newark. Travelers from Puerto Rico came from San Jose and most German passengers fly from Munich. For Russia, most travelers come from Vnukovo, while Canada's top city for Cancun travel is Windsor.
The new routes included those from Torreon and Palenque, Mexico, Moscow and Domodedovo, Russia, Medellin, Colombia, Richmond, Virginia, Des Moines, Iowa, and Liege Bierset, Belgium.
Tourism secretary Marisol Vanegas Pérez explained to Riviera News that "visitors are attracted by our natural beauties and clean beaches, of which we are proud."
With the new routes, Cancun International Airport reported 22.9 million passengers from January to November, giving the airport a 6.9 percent increase compared to 2017. Just recently, the airport received its 24th million passenger over the holiday season, during which the airport prepared for one million passengers.
The 25th passenger is expected to land at the airport today on December 30 around 11:30 a.m. at Terminal 3.
