Visitors to Croatia can expect to pay a little bit more starting next year.
According to The Independent, the country will increase its tourist tax by 25 percent, raising the per person per night charge for hotel stays from 8 kuna ($1.25) to 10 kuna ($1.56).
The new charges will apply to all accommodation with the exception of campsites. That tax will remain the same at 8 kuna.
The increase is scheduled to come into effect January 1, 2019 and will only be applied during peak season.
The current tax has remained fixed since 2005 when the country was hosting far fewer visitors. Croatia has experienced a sharp rise in interest from travelers of late in wake of appearances in the hit television series Game of Thrones. Since then, more and more travelers have flocked to the Balkan destination to taste its food and wine, witness its natural beauty and experience its charming towns for themselves.
Earlier this year, the 2018 Virtuoso Luxe report revealed Croatia was climbing the ranks of the world's most coveted luxury destinations.
The Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ) said the funds collected will be redistributed to cities, counties, HTZ and the Red Cross with the ultimate goal being to strengthen the country's competitive position in the global tourism industry.
"More money from a residence tax means more money to promote the country. This would greatly help us continue in the promotional and marketing sense but also to impose trends in order to strengthen the recognition of Croatia as a tourist destination on the international market," stated HTZ director Kristjan Stanicic.
