When Americans head to Europe, there’s a handful of museums that are on nearly everyone’s to-do list.
The Louvre in Paris, check. The Uffizi in Florence. Check. And the Vatican in Rome. Also check.
A new, data-driven ranking from The Tour Guy, meant to help Americans find attractions they’ll enjoy most, confirms that these three museums are objectively the top picks in Europe.
The ranking is based on what Americans search for online, how they rate museums, and how much they pay for tickets.
While it’s hardly surprising that revered institutions like the Louvre are popular, a few unexpected sleeper hits also landed among the top 15.Here’s a closer look at what the data revealed about the museums and attractions Americans like to visit most when in Europe.
Vatican and Sistine Chapel win on interest among Americans
These two locations top the ranking, landing in the number one slot among American travelers. They earned the highest average monthly search volume among Americans (175,000).
“The long history of this attraction, together with how secret the place is and the mystery behind the Holy See are the reasons behind the curiosity,” says the report.

Louvre records the highest satisfaction
The Louvre earns 4.7 stars across more than 378,000 Google reviews. Considering the massive number of masterpieces in the Parisian museum, this is not surprising at all.
What may be a little surprising to some, however, is that while the Louvre is the most visited museum in the world, it isn’t Americans’ top pick in Europe. It comes in second behind the Vatican and Sistine Chapel.
Uffizi Gallery rounds out the top three
The stunning Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy earned the third slot in this ranking. Home to a jaw-dropping collection of the world’s most prominent Italian Renaissance paintings and art, this museum is housed in a building dating back to 1560, originally designed for Cosimo I de' Medici to serve as administrative and legal offices for the Florentine magistrates.
The rest of the top 10
Sure, the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and the Louvre will leave you awed and inspired. But they're really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all that there is to take in when exploring Europe. Additional museums you’ll want to visit, which also landed among the top 10 of The Tour Guy ranking, include:
- Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England
- Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Musée d’Orsay, Paris, France
- Tate Modern, London, England
- National Gallery, London, England
- Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Museo Nacional del Prado
Sleeper hits that made the cut
A handful of lesser-known museums and galleries also earned a spot among the top 15 on The Tour Guy ranking, places that also deserve to be on your radar for future visits.
They include: Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Petit Palais in Paris, and Krakow’s Wawel Royal Castle.
