If you plan to visit
Greece this year, plan
on paying.
To take advantage of what
is expected to be record crowds this year and to help pay for the forest fires
and flooding from last year, the Greek government has implemented a new tax on
tourists for 2024.
The government hopes to
use the modest tax increase to help fund the recovery efforts. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos
Mitsotakis made the announcement at a tourism fair, ironically.
This new tax
will partly replace the old bed tax and will vary in price depending on the
season. However, the new climate tax will be associated with accommodations for
tourists.
The tourism
fee, in euros, will depend on the level and rating of the hotel in which you
stay.
The Greek government expects this new regulation to generate up to 300 million
euros in additional revenue in 2024.
This new tax
will also apply to short-term rentals.
Some are
concerned, however, that this new tax will dissuade tourists from visiting
Greece in 2024. That is why it kept the old bed tax at the same rate during the
low season from November through February.
But only time
and the number of tourists the European country attracts will ultimately make
the difference.
