WHY IT RATES: Global travel spending is on the rise, with Houston experiencing significant economic benefits, including $16.2 billion in travel spending and 205,000 tourism-related jobs in 2025.
New findings show that global travel spending has continued to climb, and Houston is seeing the impact firsthand.
According to new data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and a report by TravelPulse, global travel and tourism investment surpassed $1 trillion in 2025, an 8.5% increase from 2024.
The industry contributed a record-setting $11.6 trillion to the global GDP, outperforming the broader global economy and underscoring tourism's expanding role as a worldwide economic driver.
The United States remains the world's largest travel market, investing $245 billion in tourism-related development in 2025. WTTC projects that figure will grow to $380 billion by 2036, as American destinations continue investing in infrastructure, events and visitor experiences.
Where Houston Fits into the Findings
Houston's tourism economy has followed a similar trajectory. The Houston metropolitan area welcomed 90.1 million visitors in 2025, including day and overnight travelers. Roughly 3 million of those were international visitors.
Economy & Job Market: The visitor economy generated $16.2 billion in travel spending and produced a total economic impact of $26.8 billion across the region. The travel industry directly supported nearly 205,000 jobs in the Houston metropolitan area and accounted for approximately 4% of total employment in the region. In total, the Leisure & Hospitality industry—which includes restaurants, attractions, hotels and more—accounts for 381,000 jobs or more than 1 in 10 jobs in the region. The 205,000 jobs directly tied to visitors are a subset of that broader figure.
Widespread Spending: Houston tourism spending supported sectors including food and beverage ($4.7 billion), lodging ($3.9 billion), transportation ($2.9 billion), retail ($2.6 billion) and recreation and entertainment ($2.1 billion).
Conventions and Events: Houston's status as a major meeting and conventions destination also contributed to those results. The region hosted 730,000 attendees for events booked by Houston First in 2025, while Houston airports served 62 million passengers. Hotels across the Houston metro recorded 22.8 million room bookings during the year.
Houston’s Outlook in Global Tourism
While global tourism investment is increasingly concentrated in major markets such as the United States, China, India and Europe, Houston's performance demonstrates how local destinations can benefit from broader industry momentum.
Major cities with diverse visitor experiences, strong convention infrastructure, and international connectivity appear to be best positioned to capitalize on the growing share of visitor spending.
The numbers suggest tourism remains one of the Greater Houston area’s most significant economic engines, contributing billions in spending, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs and helping drive growth across a wide range of industries.
