Every day, a restaurant in a southwest Houston shopping center packs about 2,000 meals to-go. Aga’s, an Indian-Pakistani restaurant, has the most Uber Eats orders of any single-location restaurant in the world. The restaurant’s CEO Shaukat “Sal” Maredia says it has held the No. 1 spot for at least three years, but takeout orders are not majority of their business. According to Sal, dine-in traffic represents about 60% of their daily volume inside the 700-capacity restaurant.

The ongoing story on Aga’s local success in the fourth largest US city is remarkable, but for those of us who sell destinations, the more useful point is what the ranking says about the city behind it.

A True Foodie City Breaks Patterns

Based on traditional indicators, Aga’s is not expected to lead a global delivery ranking: Indian and Pakistani food isn’t among Uber Eats’ three most-ordered cuisines, and Houston isn’t among the platform’s top three delivery cities. But the restaurant didn’t reach that volume by expanding its menu for a mass audience. Aga’s has kept its food rooted in Indian and Pakistani flavors, with dishes such as nihari, biryani, goat chops, instead of adapting for mainstream tastes. What makes that possible is the community behind it.

The Houston area has about 655,000 South Asian residents, according to Rice University’s Kinder Institute. Aga’s authentic taste has propelled the restaurant to record-breaking heights because Houston’s food enthusiasts and diverse communities support it. Additionally, a 2024 Escoffier analysis of federal consumer spending data found that Houston spends the highest share of their overall food budget on eating at restaurants, about 31.72% of food budgets went toward eating out. There is really, really good food in Houston, and locals’ spending shows how good it is.

Diverse Neighborhoods Built Around Tables

Many cities claim diversity, but unlike those many, Houston shows it. The city has over 13,000 restaurants representing more than 70 countries. It would take a little over 11 years to taste every restaurant if one ate out for dinner every Friday, Saturday and Sunday of every week.

Much of the diverse cooking is concentrated in districts that work ideal for quick excursions. Houston’s Asiatown is a long stretch of shopping centers anchored by large Asian supermarkets, the area covers a wide range of cuisines, from Taiwanese to Korean and everything in between. A short drive away, the Mahatma Gandhi District is the center of Indian culture in Texas, and Houston’s proud to have it! The Ghandi District welcomes thousands of visitors every weekend and is home to restaurants, shops and markets that serve visitors and locals alike, offering authentic taste in Houston.

Lastly, the Michelin’s newest Houston Bib Gourmands include Máximo, West African restaurant ChòpnBlọk, and Vietnamese newcomer Annam. For advisors, this makes it possible to build a trip around a theme, such as a culinary tour of the Gulf, Asia, or West Africa, all within one metro area and without long transfers between spots.

Recognition at Every Level

The 2025 Michelin Guide Texas included 44 Houston restaurants, up from 30 in the 2024 debut edition. All six Houston restaurants with one star kept them: BCN Taste & Tradition, CorkScrew BBQ, Le Jardinier, March, Musaafer and Tatemó. That list covers Spanish, French, Indian and Mexican cuisine and includes barbecue. CorkScrew was among the first barbecue restaurants in the country to earn a star. Houston also stood out for hospitality, Credence was the only restaurant in Texas to receive Michelin’s Service Award.

For advisors, this range is the most useful feature. A single itinerary can include a 700-seat Indo-Pak dining room, a Bib Gourmand lunch, and a Michelin-starred tasting menu, so the city works for a family on a budget, a couple celebrating an anniversary, and a group with mixed preferences.

Why This Matters

In TravelBoom’s 2026 leisure travel research, 64% of travelers said they prefer unique local experiences over fine dining or Michelin-starred restaurants. And the truth is, very few U.S. destinations try to compete Houston’s combination of range, recognition, and value.

Houston’s strongest culinary asset is exactly the kind of place Aga’s represents; food cooked for our own community at global-recognition level. That same local demand is what makes Houston a strong recommendation for everyone that loves a destination with good food.
