Tourists beware!

Construction that is expected to last a month in Las Vegas began recently as part of the preparations for the city to host the Super Bowl on February 11.

The work began on Wednesday.

Just as the city did in November for the Formula 1 racing Grand Prix, Las Vegas will transform for the event, which is coming to the area for the first time.

Road closures on the Las Vegas Strip have already begun, as numerous hospitality suites are expected to be built in the coming weeks. The NFL and CBS, which will televise the big game, made their presentations to the city and the county last month.

Katie Keenan, senior director of event operations for the league, said: “We start on the stadium campus on January 8, and will continue sort of a progressive build as we get closer and closer to game day in preparation for that stadium campus lockdown that we do on February 3.”

Patty Power, CBS Executive Vice President of Operations and Engineering, said four stages are already being constructed around the famous fountains of the Bellagio Resort. They will be used for news, sports and entertainment programming leading up to the game.

“We will have over 100 hours of programming beginning on Monday (February 5) and culminating with the NFL Today on Super Bowl Sunday,” Power said.

So it is likely that the city, especially the area around the Las Vegas Strip, will become one giant construction zone for the next month. But it is all part of a larger plan to lure even more tourists to Las Vegas with significant events and conventions.

In fact, one of the automobile lanes on Las Vegas Blvd. is expected to become a pedestrian walkway.

For the next month, however, tourists should be aware of some major diversions, whether they drive or walk around Las Vegas.

City officials believe it is a small price to pay now for an investment in the future.
