WHY IT RATES: Linderhof Palace's Venus Grotto, an illusionistic masterpiece by King Ludwig II, is restored and open for public visits, offering tours with tickets available on-site or online. —Janeen Christoff, TravelPulse Executive Editor
More than 100 years ago, the Bavarian King Ludwig II had Linderhof Palace built and the park laid out, creating one of the most diverse and artistic ensembles of the 19th century.
The Venus Grotto is a particular highlight. This unique construction in the form of an artificial dripstone cave is the high point of King Ludwig II’s illusionistic architecture. Here he conjured up the first act of the opera ‘Thannhäuser’ by Richard Wagner and the Blue Grotto of Capri.
Following comprehensive restoration measures, the Venus Grotto is again open to the public.
Visitors can then experience the staging in its original splendour, true to the historical original. For example, the shell throne and the crystal throne have been reconstructed and guests can now once again enjoy the enchanting, newly restored and illuminated shell barge and the Tannhäuser painting. Colourful lighting, babbling brooks and a wave machine complete the Grotto atmosphere.
