A European Collection opens on April 30, 2026 at the Christian Schad Museum in Aschaffenburg, presenting 73 masterpieces from the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum in Kyiv. Spanning the 15th to 19th centuries, the exhibition features major European artists including Rubens, Bellotto, and Vernet, offering a rare overview of key movements in Western art.
This is the first comprehensive presentation of these works in Germany and marks one of the most significant displays of Ukrainian cultural heritage in Europe since the start of the war. The project reflects a strong international collaboration aimed at preserving and sharing cultural heritage during a time of conflict.
The exhibition is organized by major European art schools—Italy, the Netherlands/Flanders, France, and Spain—and includes a striking dialogue between Antonio Canova’s La Pace and a contemporary work by Ukrainian artist Maria Kulikovska, connecting historical ideals of peace with the realities of war today.

Aschaffenburg, Bavarian Nice
Aschaffenburg – also known as the Bavarian Nice for its mild, sunny climate – is the gateway to the Spessart hills. It is a town that combines tradition and modernity, shopping and culture, a buzzing atmosphere and architectural splendour.
You'll be struck by Aschaffenburg's charming ambiance wherever you go, while its many fountains add a touch of flamboyance and fun. Its rustic bars and wealth of culture offer visitors a variety of things to do. The best place to explore the sunny side of Aschaffenburg is in its historical centre with possibly the most beautiful Classicist theatre in southern Germany, the Stadtloggia building, the water features and the massive sun dial. Johannisburg Palace, the magnificent Renaissance masterpiece built in 1614, towers over the Old Town. It houses the Bavarian State Painting Collections featuring the most important Lucas Cranach collection in Europe as well as the Palace Museum with artworks and historical artifacts spanning six centuries of history.
