In August of 2017, the U.S. State Department extended its travel warnings in Mexico to include newly-mentioned regions of the country. This includes Cancun and Los Cabos, two of the most popular areas for travelers seeking the beauty and culture of Mexico.
Since then, some travelers have been worried about venturing to these spots-or to Mexico at all.
But are travelers right to worry? Many say "yes," even going as far as implying travelers should stay home or choose another destination altogether.
On the flip side, Mexico may be perfectly safe as long as you know which pitfalls to avoid and what to watch out for. The reality is, within Mexico's most popular tourist districts, everything is business as usual.
According to the Los Cabos Tourism Board, the city today is a safe and secure destination that annually welcomes more than 2 million international travelers from all over the world. This year alone, the public and private sector have invested more than $47 million dollars in security efforts around Los Cabos and have also newly enacted "a five-point action plan to ensure the safety of all tourists and citizens."
The plan includes various safety features, such as expanding Los Cabos's security surveillance system across from San Jose del Cabo through the corridor and across Cabo San Lucas while also "building a new marine base to amplify ongoing law enforcement activity."
Per the Los Cabos Tourism Board, the area offers unique landscapes, a new class of luxury, a world-class service culture and unexpected, authentic experiences that root deeply in Mexican culture.

"The spirit of Los Cabos is alive and authentic," says the Los Cabos Tourism Board, adding that "90 percent of people that live here work directly or indirectly in tourism and are fully committed to the destination's success."
Los Cabos is sunny as many as 350 days per year. Further, more than 30 percent of homes in Los Cabos are owned by Americans while more than 83 percent of Los Cabos visitors are from the U.S. each year.
Arrivals from LA, Dallas, Phoenix San Francisco, San Diego and Houston are the top six international destinations out of all people who arrive in Los Cabos each year. More than 70 percent of Los Cabos visitors are repeat guests, and 90 percent of first-time visitors say they will return.
Los Cabos features more than 72 resorts and 16,000 rooms. As a whole, the tourism industry of Los Cabos is growing at double the pace of tourism to Mexico while international arrivals to the country are up more than 20 percent in 2017.
Each year, Los Cabos successfully hosts "several large-scale, marquee events including Open of Surf, the Los Cabos Open of Tennis ATP 250, the Extreme Sailing Series and the Los Cabos film festival attracting celebrities and major film industry players from around the world."
If you're taking a closer look at Mexico for your next destination, it's definitely worth paying attention to warnings from the U.S. State Department. At the same time, Mexico is a massive, diverse and largely safe country with millions upon millions of satisfied tourists every year.

Consider giving Los Cabos a try: The city is gorgeous, brimming with activities for visitors with all sorts of interests and dedicated to the safety of those who visit. And since Los Cabos is just a short plane ride away from many U.S. cities, it's easy enough to get there.
