The Association for the Promotion of Tourism to Africa (APTA) successfully held its Global Forum 2024 in Costa Mesa, California, from September 19-22. This event marked APTA's first U.S.-based forum since the COVID-19 pandemic, following last year's event in Cape Town, South Africa.
The forum brought together 76 participants, including North American travel advisors and top African suppliers. The event featured two days of presentations, networking opportunities and APTA Connect B2B sessions, which facilitated one-on-one meetings between buyers and suppliers.
Jessie Tate, Acting Executive Director of APTA, emphasized the significance of returning to the U.S. for the Global Forum:
“Our return to the U.S. for the Global Forum was a major milestone for APTA, and th turnout reflects the growing interest in African tourism among North American buyers, said Tate. "We’re thrilled with the energy, enthusiasm and productive connections made here. The success of this year’s even only strengthens our commitment to continue building bridges between North America and Africa’s tourism industries.”
The event included keynote speakers such as Melissa Sciacca from Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Kim Livingstone from San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and Karin Jones of Anastasia's Africa, who shared insights on conservation, sustainability and the future of African tourism.
As the forum concluded, Tate announced her return to her role as head of APTA's Virtual Chapter. Todd Neuman was appointed as the new Executive Director, bringing more than 35 years of experience in the airline and travel industries to the role.
Looking ahead, APTA plans to alternate the Global Forum's location between Africa and the United States annually, with the 2025 event set to return to Africa.
