Designated a UNESCO World Heritage city in 1987, Puebla,
Mexico is recognized for its authentic colonial architecture, vibrant arts
scene, and deep historical roots.
Widely regarded as one of Mexico’s culinary capitals, Puebla
is celebrated as the birthplace of mole poblano, a rich, complex sauce made
with dried chiles, nuts, seeds, spices, and chocolate, traditionally served
over turkey or chicken.
The city’s gastronomy continues to evolve through a
dynamic contemporary dining landscape that honors tradition while embracing
innovation.
There are 24 tourist routes across the city, accounting for nature
and eco tourism, history and culture, gastronomy, extreme and adventure and religious
pursuits. According to VisitPuebla, there are 295 visitor experiences available
across more than 80 municipalities in Puebla.
Puebla features a mosaic of celebrations, traditions and
customs that blend indigenous, colonial and contemporary elements. Visitors can
explore the vibrant colors of its carnivals and the pride of its parades. Each
community celebrates its patron saints through a wide variety of festivals. The
people of Puebla honor their history and cultural identity with deep tradition
and devotion.
Puebla is also growing more accessible. “Puebla is two hours south of Mexico City. We are connected from Houston, Newark and Los
Angeles to the United States” by nonstop flights aboard United Airlines, said Carla
Lopez Malo Villalon, Mexico’s secretary of tourism.
The city is also serviced by Volaris from Houston, Newark
and Los Angeles in addition to 11cities inside of Mexico. There is a total of
337 hotels in the city, accounting for 13, 813 rooms.
“We have nature, family, history, cultural and community-based
tourism,” said Villalon. “Puebla is a very rich site for heritage and culture. We
have 16th century convents, a historic center and the Palafoxiana
Library, the first public library in Latin America. The historic center was
recognized by UNESCO in 1987; we have one of the largest cathedrals in Mexico.”
In terms of gastronomy, “we have mole poblano, mole de cadares
and mezcal, which is a little like tequila but better. Those are some of the
most iconic gastronomy items we have,” said Villalon.
Beyond culture and gastronomy, Puebla is also recognized as
a major industrial and economic hub. Puebla offers a travel experience that
feels both open and immersive. Building on this momentum, the destination has
also been selected to host Tianguis Turístico 2027, Mexico’s largest tourism conference, reinforcing
Puebla’s position as one of Mexico’s most compelling destinations now and entering
a new era of global popularity.
