For the most part, the safest cities in America tend to be on the smaller side.
And although they don’t sound like tourist towns, you can always find something to do wherever you go. Take Lexington, Mass. for instance. While it might be on the smaller side, it is steeped in Revolutionary War history. And according to a new Visual Capitalist study, it is one of the 10 safest cities in the country.
But you still have to do your research.
Just because it’s a small city doesn’t mean it’s safe.
Some of the smallest places in the country can actually be among the most dangerous. Take for example Bessemer, Alabama, with a population of around 26,000 and a violent crime rate of 33.1 per every 1,000 residents.
The research only considered cities with a population of 25,000 or higher. This report is based on total index crimes reported in each city, which includes arson, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault.
Of the 100 safest U.S. cities, 40 percent were located in the Northeast. The top 10 are:
- Ridgefield, Connecticut
- Franklin, Massachusetts
- Lake in the Hills, Illinois
- Marshfield, Massachusetts
- Burlington, Massachusetts
- Fulshear, Texas
- Zionsville, Indiana
- Lexington, Massachusetts
- Muskego, Wisconsin
- Rexburg, Idaho
