The Cedar Fair Entertainment Company operates nearly a dozen amusement parks across the United States, including Carowinds, Cedar Point, Dorney Park and Knott's Berry Farm, among others.
Tuesday, the company's president and CEO Matt Ouimet made waves during a conference call, announcing that Cedar Fair plans to test a virtual reality application on a roller coaster sometime this fall, the Allentown Morning Call reported.
However Ouimet didn't specify which park or which coaster would serve as the company's guinea pig. Instead, that information will be revealed in the coming weeks, a Cedar Fair spokeswoman told the Morning Call.
"This is only a test, but it starts to give you a flavor for the opportunities that could happen over time where we could create a compelling and reprogrammable experience with less capital," said Ouimet during the conference call centered on the company's second-quarter earnings.
"We expect to be in a position shortly to announce other projects of this nature."
Prior to Tuesday's intriguing announcement, Ouimet told the Los Angeles Times in April that Cedar Fair planned to expand its Amusement Dark concept to each of its 11 amusement parks around the country.
The concept pertains to interactive dark rides, indoor attractions that typically rely on animation and special effects to entertain riders.
"I think ultimately you'll see them at every Cedar Fair park," Ouimet told the Times this past spring.
"We have a long-term objective of not just being a place where you ride rides, but it's a place where you come to have fun," Ouimet said on Tuesday, also announcing plans to roll out parkwide Wi-Fi at the company's five biggest parks by 2016.
What's more, Cedar Fair reported a $14 million increase in net revenue for the second quarter of 2015 compared to the same period last year.
