According to the latest Holiday Relaxation Report by wellness retreat booking platform BookRetreats, Iceland ranks as the number one destination worldwide for peace and quiet. 

BookRetreats' analysis evaluated 76 destinations using nine key metrics, including crowd density, light and noise pollution, forest coverage, protected areas and the availability of wellness experiences. Each location received a score out of a possible 100 points, with Iceland claiming the highest spot on the list for a serene escape. 

"Iceland is the best place for quiet holidays," BookRetreats stated in a release shared with Travel + Leisure. "The country is home to only one city, scoring top marks for low noise and light pollution, as well as traffic congestion." 

Beyond Reykjavík, Iceland "opens into vast stretches of untamed terrain" where visitors can marvel at towering glaciers, soak in geothermal hot springs, and walk along striking black sand beaches. "This environment blended with mindful modern living provides genuine opportunities for stillness that few other destinations can match," BookRetreats revealed.

The report also highlights Iceland’s distinction as the third most relaxing holiday spot in Europe, crediting the island’s sparse population, quiet towns and otherworldly natural features.

Those looking for tranquil retreats outside of Iceland might consider some other options that made the top 10 list. The report ranks Montenegro, Botswana, Estonia and Finland as top contenders, all of which also offer plenty of ample space, peaceful landscapes and unspoiled natural beauty.
