After years of grappling with overtourism, Venice is set to begin issuing tickets for day trippers seeking to enter the city.

The new system will begin April 25 and will only be implemented on certain days during peak season, which runs from late April through July 14.

The cost of the tickets is 5 euros, which amounts to about $5.45. The tickets must be purchased for each person who plans to visit and for each day you plan to visit.

Entry tickets however, will not be required of visitors who have booked overnight accommodations in the city, according to the ticket website. However, overnight visitors will need to obtain an exemption from the ticket requirement in advance of arrival.

Tourists seeking to explore the popular Italian city will need to purchase entry tickets via a new online platform that has just been launched by Venice’s city council.

Dates When Tickets Are Required

There are specific dates when the entry tickets will be needed for day trippers headed to Venice, according to the ticket website. Those dates include:

  • April 25 -30
  • May 1-5
  • May 11-12
  • May 18-19
  • May 25-26
  • June 8-9
  • June 15-16
  • June 22-23
  • June 29-30
  • July 6-7
  • July 13-14

Once prospective visitors have purchased day trip passes online, a copy is emailed to the traveler and serves as their entry ticket. The ticket can be printed or saved to your phone.

It’s also important to note that entry tickets are not required for those who plan to visit between 4.00 p.m. and 8.30 a.m. However, tickets are required from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Additionally, minors under age 14 do not require tickets. Documentation may be requested to prove a child’s age.

Exemption Requests

A separate page on the new website provides a long list of exemption categories available for visitors. The available exemptions include guests of a hotel or accommodation facility within Venice. But be sure to visit the website and get your exemption pass prior to arriving in the city.

Hotel guest exemptions are valid from the day of your arrival at a hotel until the day of your departure.

There are some additional exemptions worth noting for tourists. Per CNN, the city will not require entry tickets for individuals seeking to visit Venice’s lagoon islands. This includes Murano, Burano, and Lido. Though if you pass through Venice to get to the islands, you will be required to purchase an entry ticket anyway.

Tickets can also be canceled up until 11:59 p.m. the night before a scheduled visit.
